Role of community football facilities revealed
Nearly 60 per cent of adults questioned as part of new research by the Football Foundation (FF) have said that improved community sports facilities would reduce antisocial behaviour.
According to the FF's findings, the majority of people believe that upgrading local sites and nurturing young people through sport can help tackle social unrest across the country. Meanwhile, around 50 per cent believe that improved facilities would "prevent gangs loitering on street corners" and 40 per cent said such venues would generate community pride.
Former footballer Dion Dublin said: "Having enough good quality local sports facilities is incredibly important for sport at all levels. Every player started at the grassroots so it is vital that we have the platform to nurture the next generation of talent. "But it's also essential for society as a whole: football and other sports are a great way to let off steam and to stay fit and healthy."
FF chief executive Paul Thorogood added: "This latest research demonstrates the importance the general public places on having access to good quality local sports facilities, not just for playing sport, but as a critical component to exploiting the undoubted power of sport to address issues of social cohesion and health, especially among young people."
