Rockin’ at KOKO
Legendary north London nightclub Camden Palace has been relaunched as a 1,500-capacity live music venue called KOKO following a six month, £4m refurbishment by the Mint Group.
Mint Group aims for the revamped site to become a central live music venue that is ‘classy yet unpretentious and upmarket but without attitude’. KOKO opened with a six-night festival for 10,000 people.
Featuring a tiered dancefloor on the ground floor that leads up to the main stage, surrounded by three main bars, the first level and upper circles of the former theatre allow for the Grade II listed building to be adapted for either intimate or large-scale events.
The origins of the site date back to the late 1800s, when it housed the Palace Theatre. Following a brief spell as a cinema in the 1960s, the building was subsequently turned into a music venue in the 1970s called The Music Machine before becoming the Camden Palace in 1983.
Marketing director of Mint Group Eddie Hill said: “The aim of the refurbishment is to return the old Camden Palace to its former glory. The building was a first class venue with an incredible heritage that had simply fallen into disrepair.
“It sounds simple, but we believe KOKO will be a ground-breaking new live entertainment venue for London.” Details: www.koko.uk.com
