Renovation plans for Smithsonian museum
Plans have been revealed for a renovation of the 120,000sq ft (11,148sq m) west exhibition wing at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History in Washington DC, US.
The attraction's centre core and east wing will remain open during the transformation, with proposals including the creation of new galleries, an education centre and interior plazas.
Performance spaces and upgraded infrastructure are also planned as part of the overhaul, in addition to the installation of a panoramic window overlooking the Washington Monument.
When complete, the facility will focus on the role of democracy in American history, as well as showcasing the nation's culture and exploring business and innovation heritage.
EwingCole are behind the overall planning and design of the project, with the new-look west wing to reopen in winter 2014 to coincide with the attraction's 50th anniversary.
Marc Pachter, interim director of the museum, said: "The renovation's overarching theme will be centred on the core principles and the very dynamic of American democracy.
"Democracy is what shapes our economic life, our cultural life and, in short, what makes America, America. And visitors will see this reflected in future exhibitions, the education centre and in programs and national outreach."
