Refurbished Charlton Lido proves a hit with locals
London's historic Charlton Lido has been a huge hit with local residents since it re-opened following a massive £2m refurbishment earlier this year.
Since the 50m, outdoor heated pool re-launched in March 2013, more than 5,000 swimmers have enjoyed the opportunity to swim in the open air within magnificent period surroundings. The busiest day of the year so far was the May Bank Holiday, when the pool attracted 560 visitors and, as the summer holidays approach, it's anticipated that Charlton Lido will be the 'must go' destination in London this summer.
The revamped lido has been designed to appeal to all members of the community. In addition to recreational swimming, the pool has already hosted a number of events including, Swimathon, a master class with former Olympic gold medallist Duncan Goodhew and "Kids for a Quid" an initiative that allows under-16s to swim for just £1. The lido also runs a range of individual and group swimming lessons, while the next scheduled course is "Get Safe for Summer" on 26th June, which will offer training on first aid for children.
Victoria Oldfield, general manager at Charlton Lido said: "We have had fantastic feedback from the public since the Lido re-opened at Easter. With our uncertain weather, users really appreciate the fact that the pool is now heated; while on sunny days there is nowhere better to relax and unwind.
"Later this year, the second phase of the lido's renovation will be completed. This will mean a range of new leisure facilities including a gym and studio will open alongside the pool. Ideal for visitors who prefer to stay on dry land."
The refurbishment of Charlton Lido is the cornerstone of the £4m Olympic legacy that has transformed Hornfair Park into a multi-sports hub, which includes new tennis and basketball courts and a BMX track. It has been made possible thanks to funding from charitable social enterprise GLL, The Royal Borough of Greenwich Council and Sport England.
