Redcar council confirms leisure centre sale plans
Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council (RCBC) has put the site of Redcar Leisure Centre up for sale as part of plans to raise funds.
The local authority is hoping to see a return of around £18m on the sale of the leisure centre and three other properties - the former Eston Town Hall, the Register Office in Guisborough and Redcar Youth Centre.
Redcar Leisure Centre sits on a 4.72-acre seafront plot and is set to close when a new £31m Redcar Leisure & Community Heart opens in the town centre in 2014.
Willmott Dixon has been appointed to build the new complex, which has been designed by leisure specialists S&P Architects in collaboration with Plus Three Architecture.
A fitness suite and a junior gym will be among the facilities at the development, along with a 25m, six-lane swimming pool, a training pool, a learning pool and a sports hall.
Councillor Norman Pickthall, Cabinet Member for Corporate Resources, said: "Disposing of buildings and land that we no longer require makes perfect sense in the present economic climate.
"We are committed to working as smartly and efficiently as possible, sharing accommodation with partners and running services from other council buildings where possible."
