Recession cancels Heston pool plans
Plans for a £20m leisure centre in Heston, Hounslow, have been shelved as a result of the uncertain economic climate.
The proposals included replacing the town's existing swimming pool, and building a learning disability resource centre and community rooms.
Following discussions with Barratts, it became clear that the project would not be undertaken until the housing market improved, which the council felt was detrimental to the provision of improved leisure facilities in the area.
Cllr Peter Thompson, leader of the London Borough of Hounslow, said: "While it's disappointing that we can't take this forward any further in its present form, we have to be realistic.
"The deal on the table would not have seen anything being built for a significant time, and would have prevented any other plan being put in place.
"We are deeply committed to giving local people the leisure facilities they deserve, so now we are going to take a look at what other options there are."
The executive committee will meet again later this year to discuss other options.
