Olympic champion to open £11.9m Kidderminster leisure centre
Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington will officially open an £11.9m (US$15.1m, €13.5m) sport and leisure centre in Kidderminster this month.
The Wyre Forest Leisure Centre opened its doors to the public in July, but now Adlington – who won two gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics – will unveil the facility to the wider world.
Operated by Places for People Leisure, the centre has a six-lane 25m swimming pool, a learner pool with moveable floor, a 100-station fitness suite, a six-court sports hall, dance studios, a climbing wall and small-sided outdoor pitches.
A cafe, children’s play area and a health suite with a sauna and steam room will also be located in the facility.
Place for People will operate the centre on behalf of the council for the next 25 years. The company won the contract to design and build the development with architects Roberts Limbrick.
The operator manages 113 leisure centres across England.
Marcus Hart, leader of Wyre Forest District Council, said the facility had “received fantastic feedback” since its opening.
“We are proud to provide this wonderful facility which offers many opportunities for everyone to take part in sport and leisure activities,” he added.
