Public to name new Luton aquatic centre
A new public competition has been launched by Luton Borough Council (LBC), Active Luton and Wates Construction in a bid to find an official name for the town's new £26m aquatic centre.
Designed by S&P Architects, the new Stopsley complex will comprise a 50m, eight-lane pool with integrated diving area; a high-dive training centre; and a 20m x 10m community pool. A multi-purpose sports hall; a 100-station fitness suite; two aerobics/dance studios; spectator seating; and a community function and social room are also proposed as part of the centre.
LBC leader Hazel Simmons said: "It occurred to us that it is being built for the community and therefore it is only right that Luton residents should have a say in what its official name is." Active Luton chief executive Helen Barnett added: "This is much more than a swimming pool and we want the community to come up with a name that accurately reflect this."
