Potter attraction adds garden
The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction in Bowness-on-Windermere, Cumbria, UK, has added a new exhibit for the summer season.
The Peter Rabbit Naturally Better Garden, created by garden designer Richard Lucas, features the varieties of fruit, vegetables, herbs and flowers feature by author Beatrix Potter in her works.
Lucas said: “I studied Beatrix Potter’s garden illustrations and text to identify different fruit, vegetables and flowers to include in my design and found out which varieties she would have known in her lifetime.
“It has been painstaking work – but I wanted the garden to capture the very essence of Beatrix Potter’s world from the cos lettuces that Benjamin Bunny nibbled on to the gooseberries that Peter Rabbit gets caught up in.”
Richard Foster, general manager of The World of Beatrix Potter, added: “We want visitors to enter the garden through the potting shed and feel as if they’ve stepped into one of Beatrix Potter’s tales. The garden has a magical, romantic and traditional feel, complete with herbs, salad leaves and even the odd weed.”
Foster hopes that the garden will become a resource for local schools who can use the garden as an outdoor class room, where children can learn about how their food is grown. Produce from the garden will also be used in the café.
