Plans revealed for US$400m New York Cosmos stadium
US-based football club New York Cosmos has submitted a proposal to the State of New York to build a new stadium, with an estimated cost of US$400m (300.7m euro, £252m).
The 25,000-seat Cosmos stadium would be located at Belmont Park, Nassau County, Long Island along with a youth soccer field and a 4.3-acre public park.
The privately funded Elmont Town Crossings project will be led by Turner Construction, which provided services for the new Yankee Stadium, and London-based architects Populous.
Once open, the new stadium is expected to host events such as the World Cup and Olympic qualifying matches for the U.S. Men's and Women's national team, exhibitions between world-class foreign teams, the U.S. Open Cup and NCAA games.
The project will also involve transforming two sections of Belmont Park into an entertainment complex. The complex will house a175-room hotel, a 'Restaurant Row' of nine new eateries and 250,000 sq ft (2,691sq m) of retail space.
The proposal for Elmont Town Crossings was formally delivered to the Empire State Development Corporation on January 11, 2013. If approved, work will begin early 2014 and the field will be installed and the stadium will open in spring 2016.
Retail establishments are expected to open in the autumn of 2015.
