Piers Gough scheme to breathe life into Wearside
Urban-regeneration company, Sunderland arc, has unveiled plans for the £280m redevelopment of the former Vaux Brewery site on the River Wear.
The consortium, comprising Sunderland City Council, One NorthEast and English Partnerships, was appointed by the government to breath new life into Wearside.
Its mixed-use scheme has been designed by Piers Gough and includes 90,000sq ft of leisure and retail space, a 150-room hotel more than 1,000 apartments, offices and the creation of wide pedestrian piazzas.
The majority of funding, around £200m, will come from the private sector and the consortium is currently in talks to buy 15 acres of land from Tesco.
Chief executive of Sunderland arc, Tom Macartney, said the 1.77m sq ft scheme will attract major investment into Wearside: 'The proposals are practical, long-lasting solutions to overcome the city's problems. They will fully exploit the potential of the new Metero connections and the advantages of living and working in an attractive, vibrant place.'
A planning application has been submitted to Sunderland City Council and a public consultation exercise is underway.
