Oxford withdraws from City of Culture race
Oxford has pulled out of the race to become the UK's inaugural City of Culture in 2013 after it was announced that the city would not be submitting a bid to the government.
Cultural development agency Oxford Inspires had expressed an interest in the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) initiative on behalf of Oxford City Council (OCC) and Oxfordshire County Council. However, an OCC spokesperson confirmed that the city would not be making a bid due to the necessary funding that would be required for "such a speculative bid" and will now pursue a bid to become the UNESCO World Book Capital in 2014.
The OCC spokesperson said: "We may possibly look to bid for the next UK City of Culture planned for 2017, when the criteria is clear about what the city is required to show."
