Marina Abramovic has commissioned international architects OMA to draw up plans for the redevelopment of a former theatre in Hudson, US, into a new performing arts institute.
The Marina Abramovic Institute for the Preservation of Performance Art (MAI) scheme will be led by Shohei Shigematsu and Rem Koolhaas at OMA's New York office.
Abramovic bought the theatre building in 2007 and is now aiming to create a space in which to "cultivate new kinds of performance" across a wide range of artistic disciplines.
The new MAI will also provide a "laboratory for exploring time-based and immaterial art", as well as hosting workshops, festivals and public lectures.
Abramovic said: "MAI's aim is to protect and preserve the intellectual and spiritual legacy of performance art from the 1970's into the future, and will serve as an homage to time-based and immaterial art."
Shigematsu added: "We are excited to design a new performance typology, unique in its integration of specific parameters for long duration works."
