Nottingham Castle Trust established to drive £24m development plans
A Trust has been established to help push forward £24m plans for the regeneration of Nottingham Castle.
Nottingham Castle Trust is supporting plans for the castle to be turned into a leading heritage tourist attraction, hopefully by 2019.
Its introduction is being viewed as a way to attracting further funding for the project on a new partnership basis with the local community and council, while also ensuring that the castle and its collections remain the property of the people of Nottingham.
If funding is raised and plans approved, the castle would receive the addition of a new visitor centre, as well as improved approach routes to the castle.
Development work would also see the opening of an interactive ‘Robin And The Rebels’ gallery, which would explore the region’s affiliation with the idea of citizenship, as well as the myth of Robin Hood.
The plans also include a sharper focus on the castle’s relationship with its historic caves, with a progressive glass lift being used to transport visitors from one section of the site to another.
Funding for the project is currently being sought from the Heritage Lottery Fund, however 12 cities are competing for the funds, which will only be awarded to six of the bidders.
