Luxury hotel and restaurant group Nobu Hospitality has announced the opening date of the first property in its new ryokan Collection.

Nobu Ryokan Malibu, located above the famous Carbon Beach along California’s Pacific Coast Highway, will welcome its first guests on 28 April.

Studio PCH and Montalba Architects have transformed a 1950s vintage beach motel “into an exclusive destination retreat reflecting the cool elegance of the California coastline.”

The property features 16 unique accommodations over two floors, offering panoramic views of the beach and beyond.

design practices TAL Studio, Shawmut Design and Construction, C.W. Eisner and Nikita Khan have collaborated on the project, channelling the minimalist aesthetic of traditional Japanese inns by using rich natural material palettes of teak, bronze and limestone throughout the interior and exterior.

Each guest room is designed to incorporate natural California views and Japanese design elements such as tatami mats, sand-coloured limestone walls and hand-crafted teak soaking tubs.

The building envelops an ocean-facing courtyard and a verdant garden. Additional amenities include a 37ft (11.2m), outdoor lap pool, a dedicated fitness room, access to Malibu Racquet Club and a tranquil relaxation deck. The hotel is located next to an existing restaurant operated by the Nobu group.

“Encompassing the feeling of ‘Omotenashi’, the Japanese art of hospitality, the Malibu location masterfully delivers the unique chemistry and perfect balance of luxury, fun, craft and theatre,” said Nobu Hospitality in a statement.

“The Nobu Ryokan Collection will consist of a group of individual and exclusive retreats located in exotic destinations and gateway cities where guests seek luxurious sanctuaries in discerning environments.”

Nobu Hospitality is owned by acclaimed chef Nobu Matsuhisa, actor Robert De Niro, Hollywood producer Meir Teper and developer James Packer. The group’s properties span five continents.

The first Nobu Hotel opened in 2013 as a boutique hotel within Caesars Palace Las Vegas. The Nobu Hotel City of Dreams Manila opened in 2014 and Nobu Hotel Miami Beach in 2016, followed by Nobu Hotels in London, Malibu, Ibiza, Marbella, Riyadh, Los Cabos, Chicago, Toronto and Bahrain.
