New £500k 'i-pitch' for Widnes Vikings
Widnes Vikings Rugby League Football Club has announced that it is to install an 'i-pitch' at its Stadium Stobart Halton home ahead of the start of pre-season training in December.
The club will manage the facility in partnership with Halton Borough Council (HBC), with Vikings' chair Steve O'Connor funding the installation of the surface. Manufactured by Desso Sports System, the 'i-pitch' will be installed by J Mallinson and will provide Widnes Vikings with an artificial surface on which to play and train.
The Rugby Football League (RFL) has approved the project, which will be made available to opposing teams and other clubs or sports organisations for hire - subject to availability. It is hoped that the artificial surface will enable the stadium to become more inclusive, with plans in place to host seven-a-side football; children's parties; and corporate events.
O'Connor said: "It is my vision for people to be able to 'keep on the grass' after the game and enjoy community and family/fun activities. It is absolute nonsense to have a stadium and not be able to access the pitch for 90 per cent of the time." HBC's Phil Harris added: "The Stobart Stadium Halton is a community facility and we will use this opportunity to offer increased use of the pitch to the local sporting community and others such as schools."
