New £18m sports centre planned for Westminster
Westminster City Council (WCC) has announced its plans to provide a new £18m leisure centre for residents in Queen's Park, north west London, at no cost to local taxpayers.
The local authority's proposals for the new Moberly Sports Centre will lead to the existing Jubilee and Moberly venues being merged, subject to the approval of planning permission.
If approved, the new sports centre will offer more facilities than the current sites combined and will offer an eight-court sports hall; a large health and fitness club; and dance studios.
A multi-use gymnastics and martial arts area and boxing provision also form part of WCC plans for the complex, which will be funded by selling residential properties at both sites.
Jubilee Sports Centre will remain open while the Moberly site is redeveloped before closing in May 2014. All users and activities will then transfer to the new Moberly Sports Centre.
WCC's Steve Summers said: "As part of our drive as a council to deliver value for money for taxpayers and to increase sports provision across the city, we intend to deliver a revenue cost neutral sports and leisure service across the whole city by 2015-16."
