New £11m leisure centre for Gosport
Gosport Borough Council has shortlisted four developers for its proposed £11m leisure facility to replace its existing Holbrook Recreation Centre.
Having received more than 17 expressions of interest, the council has narrowed the list down to four and is expected to make a decision on by December 2009. The facility will offer a 25m, six-lane swimming pool and teaching pool, a 200-seat spectator area, a four-court sports hall, a fitness suite with 60 to 100 stations, a sauna and steamroom and a flood-lit synthetic sports pitch. A créche, a soft play area, a café, a function area and dry and wet changing rooms will also be included.
Chair of the Holbrook Working Group, councillor Peter Chegwyn, said: "We are also looking to develop a hotel, a shop and restaurant as part of the project. "As well as a new leisure centre, the one thing we are lacking in Gosport is accommodation for visitors. With very few hotels or places where weddings or conferences can be held, a new hotel would be a great asset to the town."
Construction work on the project is expected to begin before the end of 2009 and to be finished my mid 2011. The existing recreation centre will remain open until the new facility is completed.
