New website tailors exercise for surgery patients
EIDO Healthcare has launched a website for people who have been recommended hospital treatment for chronic diseases that can be prevented by exercise. The website, endorsed by the Fitness Industry Association (FIA) and the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ASGBI), provides information for patients on the correct exercise and food to treat over 20 chronic diseases.
The site also has a search engine that allows patients to locate the nearest FIA accredited health club or to purchase fitness equipment from Life Fitness and Concept2.
To cater for those not interested in using fitness equipment, EIDO plans to collaborate with British Cycling to provide information about local cycling routes and woodland walks.
“EIDO will motivate people who are in life changing situations,” says Owain Tudor, director of EIDO Healthcare. Often, once someone has been told they need hospital treatment their outlook on life alters, EDIO plans to provide the resources to help patients change, added Tudor.
EIDO aims to align the site with the government’s £372m plan to combat problems caused by physical inactivity – in particular obesity – which is placing a financial strain on the NHS.
“We know exercise can have a beneficial effect on 20 chronic diseases and hospital patients who exercise before surgery are less likely to develop complications and can recover faster,” said ASGBI president Brian Rowlands.
