New sports centre opens in Christchurch
A new sports complex named after late Christchurch City Council (CCC) member Graham Condon has officially opened on Papanui High School land in the New Zealand city.
CCC has worked with Papanui High School worked in partnership on the Graham Condon Recreation and Sports Centre, with support from Northlands Shopping Centre.
Facilities at the new centre include a 25m swimming pool; a spa pool; a learners' pool; and a toddlers' pool with wet deck, as well as a sports hall and a fitness centre.
Christchurch mayor Bob Parker said: "The centre is a valuable addition to the city's active recreation facilities and will be especially welcomed by the north-west's fast-growing community.
"It's a tribute to our staff that through an extraordinary year with its earthquakes and extreme weather, the Centre will open on schedule."
Graham Condon served as a Shirley/Papanui community board member between 1995 and 1998, before being elected to CCC in 1998 until his death in 2007.
