New sites for Glassworks gym

The Glassworks gym, which opened in Cambridge last year, is to be rolled out across the country following the acquisition of four new sites.

The sites, yet to be disclosed, will all be conversions of old buildings like the original Glassworks, which is in an 18th century brewery overlooking the River Cam.

Conran and Partners will design two of the new sites, and the Glassworks founders, former 800m runner Will Davies and orthopaedic surgeon Tariq Mahmood, are in negotiations with other high profile architects to work on the other two sites

The new sites will all feature standard fitness club facilities including a spa, and swimming pool, but in a similar manner to Cambridge's spa overlooking the River Cam framed by floor-to-ceiling windows, each club will have a distinctive feature to make it stand out as individual rather than part of a chain.

Work will commence on the new Glassworks sites in January 2002.
