New project to 'map' Glasgow 2014 legacy
Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) has launched a new project that aims to document the impact of the 2014 Commonwealth Games on the east end of the city.
Engineering and computing academics have worked alongside student mentors and school children to launch a mobile phone application, DVD and a website to 'map' the Games' legacy. The mobile phone application aims to enable users to see visualisations of 2014 venues and explore buildings that are yet to be built - including the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.
Users will also be able to take part in some of the sports to be held at the Commonwealth Games through a "Wii-style" activity as part of the mobile phone application. Dr Lynne Baillie of GCU's School of Engineering and Computing and project leader said: "Glasgow's hosting of the Commonwealth Games presented us with a fantastic opportunity to re-examine Glasgow's sporting heritage, but in a very high-tech way.
"The phone app in particular is utilising technology that has only been around since 2009 and what we have done has never been attempted before - not for Delhi, not for London and not for the World Cup."
