New-look Mansfield swimming facility unveiled
Double Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington has officially unveiled a swimming pool in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, which has been renamed in the swimmer's honour following a £5m revamp.
Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre - the new name of Sherwood Baths - is the venue in which the athlete first learned to swim as a four-year-old on the local authority's swimming lessons programme. The £5m scheme, led by Mansfield District Council (MDC), was carried out by contractor G F Tomlinson Building and has included the main 25m pool being extended from four to six lanes and a revamp of the training pool.
A 44-station, IFI-accredited fitness suite equipped by Pulse, a technique pool, a Sherwood studio boasting interactive dance mats and activity wall and poolside changing facilities for disabled swimmers have also formed part of the scheme. MDC executive mayor Tony Egginton said: "I am delighted to officially rename the facility the Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre. This is especially appropriate as this is the pool in which she, like thousands of other children from Mansfield and the surrounding area, learned to swim."
