New leisure centre opens in Ballyfermot, Ireland
The new 25m euro ($31.2, £20m) Ballyfermot Leisure Centre in Ballyfermot, Ireland, will open on 4 November.
The centre is the fifth Leisure Centre of Excellence (LCE) developed by Dublin City Council as part of a 125m euro, five year investment in the city's sports facilities.
The 4,100 sq m leisure centre, designed by McGarry MiEanaigh Architects, features a 25m, six-lane swimming pool with a moveable floor and a boom wall, allowing the pool to be divided into two pools. There is also a sauna and a steamroom, village-style changing rooms and a 40-station TechnoGym-equipped fitness suite.
Sports facilities include an aerobics studio, six five-a-side all weather football pitches, a full size sports hall. The centre will operate on a pay-as-you-go basis as well as offering a variety of annual and monthly membership options.
Construction work was carried out by Ferrovial Agroman Ireland and includes a separate building called The Base, dedicated to youth and childcare services, on the site of the old 1960s Sean Dunne Swimming Pool. The Base boasts a performance space, a créche, health consultation and art rooms, a recording studio, a multimedia lab and a café.
A council spokesperson said: "The old swimming pool was obsolete and leisure facilities were needed in the area. The new centre was provided in accordance with the council's strategy to provide modern leisure facilities through the city."
The development of the complex began in October 2004 and was completed in June 2008, when it was handed over to the council, which will operate the facility, to fit-out.
Contributions to the funding of the facility came from the council, the Department of Arts, Sports & Tourism and the Department of Education & Science.
The other four LCE's are located in Townsend, Finglas, Ballymun and Irishtown.
