New football pitches for North Wales centre
Flintshire County Council (FCC) has announced that six new 3G five-a-side football pitches are to be unveiled at Deeside Leisure Centre, Queensferry, on 19 November.
A Dragon Sport girls' football festival is set to be held to mark the launch of the new floodlit pitches, which comprise the first phase of a £4m overhaul of the complex. The football festival will also help celebrate the tenth anniversary of Dragon Sport, a National Lottery-funded sports initiative aimed at young people aged between seven and 11 years old.
FCC executive member for leisure Dennis Hutchinson said: "This festival marks a significant step forward in the development of girls' football in the county, which continues to be the fastest growing female sport in Wales." Meanwhile, the detailed design process for the second phase of the Deeside Leisure Centre revamp is now underway, which will see work commence in early 2011.
Alliance Leisure Services will deliver the project, which will see a former first-floor nightclub converted into a new 80-station fitness suite, two fitness studios and changing rooms. The gym will boast free weights, Technogym resistance and cardiovascular equipment, along with a Shapemaster Feel Good Factory toning salon to feature both Powertone tables and Easytone chairs
An extreme sports facility will be created in the site's old ice rink, including a climbing wall; a high ropes course; and a skate park. A soft play zone and a spa are also set to be introduced.
