New education centre for Paxton reserve
A new environmental education centre has arrived at Paxton Pits Nature Reserve near Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, having been constructed off-site.
Built by Derbyshire-based Pinelog, the new facility incorporates a similar design to the reserve's existing visitor centre and includes a classroom, an office and toilets. The centre, which boasts environmental features such as a wood-burning stove and a green sedum roof, will be used by the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire and Peterborough to house its Paxton Pits education programme.
A Little Bugs Club for pre-school children, a Greenwatch group for 12-18-year-olds and adult learning workshops are also set to run as part of a partnership between the trust and the local authority. The new facility has been funded by Natural England through the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs' (DEFRA) Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund.
Huntingdonshire District Council (HDC), the Wildlife Trust, the Friends of Paxton Pits and Cambridgeshire Horizons have led the scheme. HDC executive councillor for operational and countryside services Colin Hyams said: "The new environmental education centre is placed in an ideal location for involving people in the environment."
