New cricket concept launches in Yorkshire
A new cricket concept - designed to encourage more young people to participate in the sport - has been launched in Yorkshire, following the success of a pilot scheme last year.
The pilot Carpark Cricket scheme saw temporary wickets placed in car parks across Huddersfield and will now be rolled out across the county after receiving the support of four supermarket chains. More than 250 children are set to benefit from the initiative after Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's and Co-op offered the use of parking facilities when their stores are closed on Sunday afternoons.
Yorkshire County Cricket Club (YCCC) are backing the Carpark Cricket programme, as well as the Calderdale Grassroots Community Fund and marketing agency Banana Kick. Banana Kick director Gary McCall said: "Carpark Cricket is the result of Paddock Cricket Club's excellent insight coupled with a great love of sport and determination to develop cricket at a grass roots level.
"At a time when green areas are being swallowed up by developers, Carpark Cricket can be undertaken right in the heart of communities. This could easily go global; there are car parks across the world in every community."
