New conflict museum for Libya
London-based architects Metropolitan Workshop has won the contract to design Libya's Conflict Museum in Tripoli, which will document the country's battle for independence.
The 15,000sq ft attraction will display military aircraft, guns, tanks and other weaponry in the basement gallery, the first floor galleries will feature the history of the Libyan revolution and the top level will be dedicated to 'reconciliation and remembrance'. The museum also offers a café, museum shop, prayer rooms, a poppy field garden of remembrance, an education centre with a library and conference facilities.
Marko Neskovic. associate at Metropolitan Workshop, said: "The museum provides a unique platform to showcase Libya's national story on a local and international level and educate future generations of the price of war. "The challenge for Metropolitan Workshop was to design an appropriate vessel for communicating this message. We drew from several sources: dune landscapes, desert camps and military camouflage netting. The result is a dramatic structure that references the subject matter while responding to its immediate context, physically and environmentally."
Construction work is due to begin September 2009 and is expected to open at the end of 2011.
