New attractions open at Blackpool Tower
Blackpool Council has hailed a "major milestone" in the transformation of the resort, after Merlin Entertainments unveiled two new visitor attractions at the iconic Blackpool Tower.
The attractions operator opened the new Blackpool Tower Eye observation platform and the Blackpool Tower Dungeon - six months ahead of the initial schedule. It marks the completion of the first phase of a multi-million pound restoration project, which has seen a 'Skywalk' and a 4D cinema added as part of the 'Eye' experience.
Both attractions will complement the existing Tower Ballroom and Tower Circus as Merlin works in partnership with the local authority to rejuvenate the resort's tourism appeal. Blackpool Council cabinet member for tourism and culture Graham Cain said: "With the Council's vision, Merlin's expertise and drive, and the support of our funders these figures are set to increase even further.
"Tourism is the town's key revenue driver - and we have to get this right in order to deal successfully with some of the social programmes which are so important to the town." In April, Merlin opened its first UK Madame Tussauds outside London in Blackpool.
