New D-Day exhibition to open at Explosion!
A new interactive exhibition called The Blunt End, will open on 22 May 2004 at the Explosion! Museum of Naval Firepower in Gosport in commemoration of the people who supplied the Royal Navy for the D-Day campaign Operation Overlord.
The Blunt End is timed to open on the 60th anniversary of when King George VI, Winston Churchill and Field Marshall Montgomery visited the area to view the embarkation foreshore for vital supplies and troops.
The exhibition will run until 9 January, 2005.
Interactive throughout, the exhibition will feature a trail of artefacts and visual imagery which will tell the story of how the civilian workforce of Gosport prepared for Operation Overlord and will include stories of the 2,000 troops that departed.
Curator of the museum, Chris Henry, said: “The D-Day campaign could justifiably claim to have been one of the greatest invasion armadas the world has ever seen.
“This fascinating exhibition will tell how the Gosport side of Portsmouth Harbour played an integral part in Operation Overlord.” Details: www.explosion.org.uk
