National parks 'worth £4.5bn' to economy
New figures released ahead of National Parks Week, from 25-31 July, have revealed that the UK's 15 national parks contribute more than £4.5bn to the economy.
The areas - including the Lake District; the New Forest; Snowdonia; and the Peak District - welcome more than 70 million people visiting for in excess of 160 million days. Carl Lis, chair of the UK Association of National Park Authorities, said: "In such financially austere times, it's good to see the significant value and economic benefits that National Parks deliver.
"Local communities benefit from the appeal of this unspoilt countryside through holiday accommodation and local shops, pubs, restaurants and services." National Parks Week is designed to raise awareness and to celebrate the UK's 15 national parks through a series of events.
