NESV poised to acquire Liverpool FC
Liverpool Football Club (LFC) has announced that its board has agreed to sell the club to New England Sports Ventures (NESV), owner of the Boston Red Sox baseball team.
However, the Premier League club admitted that the deal will be subject to the resolution of a legal dispute that arose with current owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett on 5 October. LFC confirmed that Hicks and Gillett sought to remove managing director Christian Purslow and commercial director Ian Ayre from the board of directors in a bid to block the sale.
It is thought that NESV has offered around £300m for LFC, which would enable the club to pay back debts owed to the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) that are due to be paid by 15 October. LFC chair Martin Broughton has also said that he is the only one able to decide the composition of the club's board in accordance with undertakings given to RBS.
Broughton said: "By removing the burden of acquisition debt, this offer allows us to focus on investment in the team. I am only disappointed that the owners have tried everything to prevent the deal from happening and that we need to go through legal proceedings in order to complete the sale." Daniel Liptrott, corporate partner at Eversheds law firm, said: "As always, the devil is in the detail, and the banking documents will be scrutinised to see if there is any opportunity to mount a sustainable legal challenge, as well as different interpretations as to directors' duties."
Elsewhere, Kidderminster Harriers Football Club has been put up for sale after current chair Barry Norgrove said the club was in need of a "fresh injection of cash". Norgrove said: "We need fresh investment to get where we want to be at the higher end of the table and I just do not have the finances to do that and I feel I am holding the club back."
In Scotland, reports are suggesting that it is increasingly likely that Dundee Football Club will have to go into administration after it failed to pay its players and staff. According to the BBC, the Scottish League Division One club is indebted to HM Revenue and Customs to the tune of £350,000, although efforts are continuing to safeguard its future.
