The Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) has announced a reshaping of its accreditation scheme.
A fresh emphasis will be given to what the organisation considers 'best practice' in museums across the UK, and is part of an ongoing restructuring process at the MLA. The MLA will continue to manage the scheme through its new Quality and Standards team, while English museums will receive support throughout the application process by Renaissance hubs. An independent panel of expert consultants will also assess applications before being put before the Accrediation Panel, which will make a final decision for the MLA. Chief executive of the MLA, Roy Clare, said: "It is fundamental that museums should be supported in, and recognised for, attaining the highest national standard. The Accreditation scheme has become firmly established and highly respected as one of our leading programmes. "As we map a stronger future for the MLA, 'best practice' is at the core." The Quality and Standards team will be also be tasked with maintaining consistency while the responsibilities of regional MLAs are integrated within the MLA before April 2009.
