Multi-sport arena proposed for Derby
A park and ride car park site at Derby's Pride Park - owned by the local authority - has been earmarked for the construction of a new multi-sport arena.
Network Rail's Wyvern land has been identified by Derby City Council (DCC) as its second preferred site for the venue, should any issues arise with the Pride Park location. The multi-sport arena will feature a 12-court sports hall and a 250m cycling track, while being able to be transformed into a 4,000-seat concert venue for the city.
Meanwhile, DCC has also named two preferred sites for a new 50m swimming pool - part of the former Derbyshire Royal Infirmary site and the Riverlights sites. Discussions with landowners with regards to the pool scheme remain ongoing, with the local authority expecting a final decision on the choice of site in June.
The plans include a floating floor and booms to segregate the pool, with a fun pool, a training pool and a fitness suite also earmarked as part of the complex. Proposals for both schemes will go before the cabinet on 12 April, with members being asked to approve the multi-sport arena preferred site and note the two prospective pool locations.
Work is due to start on the multi-sport arena in June 2012, with completion scheduled within two years.
