Minister meets with NT over planning reforms
Planning minister Greg Clark has met with the director-general of the National Trust (NT), Fiona Reynolds, over the government's proposed reforms to the UK's planning system.
It comes after the trust raised concerns that the government was not "listening" to worries that a simplified system could have "disastrous" consequences for the landscape. Reynolds said: "A bad reform of the system will lead to bad development. The concerns that we have voiced are shared by tens of thousands of people throughout the country."
Following the meeting on 7 September, however, a spokesperson for the Department for Communities and Local Government said that Clark would address specific concerns. "[Clark] suggested sitting down with the trust during the weeks ahead to consider in detail any specific concerns and suggestions that they have, and is committed to doing so."
Meanwhile, English Heritage said that, while the draft framework had helped simplify the planning system, it still had concerns over the potential reduction in heritage protection. A spokesperson for the organisation said: "For example, we are concerned that there is no policy to help decision-makers deal with proposals where there is moderate or minor harm to designated heritage assets such as listed buildings."
