Middlesbrough bridge funding bid launched
Middlesbrough's iconic Transporter Bridge could be in line for a major facelift after the local authority confirmed that it had launched a bid to receive £2.7m from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).
New glass lifts are set to be installed to increase access to the top of the bridge under Middlesbrough Council's plans for the landmark bridge, as well as improvements to a walkway at the top of the structure to coincide with its 100th anniversary in 2011. Restoration work to the bridge's existing gondola, the creation of a viewing area to the motor room, a revamped visitor centre and the replacement of the motor to boost the visitor experience are also included in the proposals.
Middlesbrough Council's executive member for transport, Charlie Rooney, said: "The Transporter Bridge is a great tourist attraction for Middlesbrough and iconic symbol for Teesside. "If this bid is successful the bridge will benefit from modern improvements with greater accessibility for all and will be a fitting way to celebrate its centenary year."
The council expects to receive notification of the outcome of the first stage of the HLF funding bid in January 2010.
