Michelin guide names first ever two-star pub
This year's Michelin Guide to Great Britain and Ireland includes the first ever pub to be awarded with two stars - the Hand and Flowers in Marlow, Buckinghamshire.
Opened by Tom and Beth Kerridge in 2005, the gastro pub received its first Michelin star in 2006.
The pub was one of only two restaurants to have been promoted from one to two stars - the other being Restaurant Sat Bains with Rooms in Nottingham.
This year's guide, published for the first time before Christmas, sees a wide geographical spread of new stars, stretching from the Driftwood Hotel in Portscatho, Cornwall to Glenapp Castle in Ballantrae, Scotland.
There are three new stars in Scotland, one in Wales and four in London, which include Dinner by Heston Blumenthal. There are also three new pubs with one star.
There were no new three-star establishments, leaving the UK with four - Fat Duck in Bray; Waterside Inn in Bray; Gordon Ramsay on Hospital Road in London; and Alain Ducasse at The Dorchester in London.
One of the new entries to the guide with its first star is The Walnut Tree in Abergavenny, Wales. The restaurant featured on the Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmare's TV show twice before being closed by its then owner, Francesco Mattioli, in February 2007.
Its remarkable turnaround is thanks to restaurateurs William Griffiths and Shaun Hill who reopened the site as a joint venture in 2008. Image: The Walnut Tree in Abergavenny
