Work starts on Rojkind Arquitectos' concert hall in Boca del Rio
Work is underway on a new concert hall in Boca del Rio, Mexico, designed by Rojkind Arquitectos.
This landmark site is part of a masterplan to regenerate the surrounding area through culture. Once an important port, crime and pollution levels have risen over the past 20 years.
The concert hall will also provide a home for the Boca del Rio Philharmonic Orchestra, which was formed last year as part of the city’s aim to become a centre for music and culture. It includes a 850-seat concert hall, rehearsal space, a music library and offices.
The striking building, comprised of jagged volumes, has a stunning waterfront location, at the breakwater between the mouth of the Jamapa river and the Gulf of Mexico. The geometry of the building references the adjacent jetty.
“The building appropriates the timeless expression of the concrete cubes formed by ripraps in the breakwater, assimilating them as its origin and reinterpreting them in a building made of apparent concrete, forming various areas of volume that contain the concert hall,” said Rojkind Arquitectos founding partner, Michel Rojkind.
Visitors will enter through a triple height lobby, which leads to the halls and music library. On the third floor there is a terrace with sweeping views of the ocean and river.
