Mapp to chair Sport England
Derek Mapp has been appointed as the new chair of Sport England, succeeding Patrick Carter.
Mapp is the founder of the Tom Cobleigh pub chain, which floated on the stock market, before being bought by Rank. Mapp left Rank in 1998, before becoming chair of the East Midlands Development Agency (EMDA) – a position he held until 2004.
He contributed to Change 4 Sport – the East Midlands' regional plan for sport, and represented government departments during negotiations on securing the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
Secretary for culture, media and sport, Tessa Jowell, said: "Derek's strong entrepreneurial background and commitment to grassroots participation make him well equipped for this challenge. He will build on the legacy of Patrick Carter, who held the position with success and distinction for the past four years."
Mapp will hold the post until 2010.
