The City of Manchester Stadium has been selected to host the final of the 2007/8 UEFA Cup campaign by Uefa's executive committee.

The venue was originally built to host the 2002 Commonwealth Games and was converted afterwards into a football stadium to act as the home of Manchester City FC.

It was recently announced that the club has gained planning permission for an 85m-high wind turbine, which will generate power for the stadium and nearby homes.

The three-bladed structure, designed by Norman Foster, will be one of the largest land-based turbines in the UK and will produce around two megawatts of electricity.

Meanwhile, Wembley Stadium, which bid to host the final of the Champions League in 2008, lost out to Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium.

The news is a blow for the beleaguered team at the national stadium. The venue, which was due to host the 2006 FA Cup Final, is looking increasingly uncertain for the 2007 Final, with a looming court battle between contractors, Multiplex and operator Wembley National Stadium Ltd.

The failure to persuade the Uefa committee of Wembley's suitability at this time of asking means that the earliest Europe's top club competition could come to London would be 2010, with 2009 already awarded to the Stadio Olympico in Rome.
