Manchester Council pulls out of Great Northern Warehouse deal
Manchester City Council’s plans to acquire the Great Northern Warehouse leisure complex in a £75m deal have been dropped.
The 400,000sq ft site – which is owned property firm Capital & Regional – was going to see its conference facilities upgraded after the acquisition, but the deal fell through after no agreement could be reached with cinema operator AMC, which runs the site’s 16-screen multiplex.
The Manchester Evening News quoted a council spokesperson as saying: "While we agreed terms from the building owners who we wish to thank for the support they provided us, we could not engage the cinema operator on any sensible basis. We will now pursue other options for enhancing our conference and exhibition facilities."
Other businesses at the site include Virgin Active as well as bars and restaurants.
The former railway warehouse – originally opened in 1898 – was converted into a leisure complex 100 years later.
