A 24-year-old man has died following an incident at the Gymplex Fitness Zone in Rohini, Delhi, India.

Police have named the victim as Saksham Pruthi, who worked for tech startup, Sploot in Gurgaon.

Witnesses said he sat down on a treadmill to rest after running, before collapsing.

He was rushed to the Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College and Hospital with a suspected heart attack, where he later died.

During a post-mortem he was found to have died from electrocution.

The gym owner, Anubhav Duggal, has been arrested and booked under laws relating to negligence and causing death by negligence.

There is no suggestion that the treadmill – made by Indian firm Nortus – was to blame.

The Delhi Gym Association has issued a statement urging operators to do maintenance checks on their equipment, saying: "Immediately check your gym's earth wiring, make sure there are no loose wires in areas where people exercise and in this rainy season get your electric points checked by an electrician."

Association president, Bhupendra Sharma, said: "This isolated incident should not [affect confidence in the wider gym market]".

The initial incident happened on Tuesday 18th July.
