MPs call for summer-time consultation
The Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee has called on the government for it to conduct a full consultation on the possible introduction of double summer time.
In a report, the committee admitted that the introduction of double British summer time does not yet have universal support, but that the issue should be looked at closely.
"There is a growing body of convincing evidence demonstrating the benefits of the proposal, not least in terms of energy savings, road safety and increased tourism revenue." the report concluded.
"On the other hand, there are objections that different time zones within the UK would not be feasible nor desirable.
"We call on the government therefore to consult widely on this matter to see if a consensus could be reached."
Colin Dawson, chief executive of BALPPA, welcomed the news: "We're delighted that the past five years of intensive lobbying activity is showing signs of serious progress.
"The argument for a three year trial is so compelling that is it difficult to believe that the Government will not agree to a full debate in the House.
"We shall continue with our campaign until this sensible and cost effective issue has been accepted."
