MOSI adds 4D effects theatre
The Museum of Science & Industry in Manchester (MOSI) has opened a 4D effects theatre as part of its strategy to add to its entertainment offering.
Situated in one of the five redeveloped warehouse buildings which make up the museum premises, the 30-seat theatre - supplied by UK-based Simworx - includes a custom grandstand seating structure built over original steps in the building.
The theatre also incorporates high definition projectors from Projection Design and the two films - Fly Me to the Moon and Pirate Story, chosen specifically by MOSI - have been supplied by nWave.
The 15-minute films will be shown every hour, on the hour and on the half hour respectively and are available as an additional pay attraction, with Simworx and the museum operating the theatre on a revenue share basis.
Simworx has agreed a similar arrangement with the RAF Museum at Hendon, London, where an effects theatre is being installed in November this year.
Terry Monkton, Simworx managing director, said the revenue share deals have enabled the company to expand into the museums and heritage sector.
"The project represents a £250,000 investment by Simworx and takes us further into the realms of operating.
"It brings a totally new element to the museum and provides some great family entertainment."
