Lord Foster secures Hong Kong arts project
Foster and Partners has beat 160 entrants to design a giant arts, cultural and entertainment quarter in Hong Kong.
Reclaimed land on west Kowloon's waterfront will be the stage for a performance venue, a range of theatres, cinemas, concert halls and modern art museum supported by a variety of leisure facilities, shops and restaurants. Parks and public spaces will form 70 per cent of the site. The signature feature of the project is a huge canopy, inspired by traditional Chinese art forms and calligraphy, which will cover the scheme.
The Hong Kong government estimate the project will cost £2bn and will work with Foster and Partners to finalise the masterplan design over the next year. The first of the facilities are due to be completed in 2008.
