London leisure operator wins UK Social Enterprise Award
GLL, one of London's largest social enterprises, is celebrating after winning a prestigious Social Enterprise Award.
The national competition, organised by the Social Enterprise Coalition, recognises the work and achievements of the UK's most inspiring and successful social enterprises.
GLL were crowned Social Enterprise Mark Holder of the Year at the UK final which took place on 30 March at The O2 in London.
The Social Enterprise Mark is the brand for social enterprise. GLL manages over 90 leisure centres in partnership with 14 London Boroughs. It aims to encourage community involvement and promote healthy living by providing quality leisure and fitness facilities at affordable prices.
Steve Ward, GLL Chair, said: "We are absolutely delighted to have been recognised with this Award. GLL were early adopters of the Social Enterprise Mark and we believe that it will play a key part in helping the public to understand and recognise businesses which are working to benefit people and planet."
Peter Holbrook, CEO of the Social Enterprise Coalition, added: "Congratulations to GLL on their fantastic win. The Social Enterprise Coalition received a record number of responses to this year's awards so to have come out on top is a truly remarkable achievement. The Social Enterprise Mark was only launched nationally last year but is already building recognition thanks to the support of members like GLL."
The event was hosted by actor and comedian Alexander Armstrong. The Leader of the Opposition, Ed Miliband, was also at the event to present one of the seven awards.
