London attraction unveils new collection
The London Bridge Experience in Southwark, London, has launched its new museum collection and educational programme for 2009, designed to depict the history of the local area.
Exhibits including hundreds of archaeological finds and artefacts from London Bridge's past, the visitor attraction's new Peter Jackson Collection – named after the late historian – will also incorporate interactive science exhibits demonstrating skills such as bridge building techniques. A wide range of workshops will also be introduced covering all aspects of the national curriculum, while the inaugural Historical Half Term event will be held next month to launch the new museum collection, which has been donated by the wife of Peter Jackson, who died in 2003.
The London Bridge Experience comprises half of a two-part attraction which also includes The London Tombs. Its new general manager, James Kislingbury, said: "London Bridge has so many fascinating stories to tell, and I am looking forward to sharing the story of this historic and iconic structure with our visitors." Opened in early 2008 by owners Lee and Danny Scriven, the London Bridge Experience has attracted some controversy during its first year. It is currently the subject of legal action by Merlin Entertainments, on the basis that it is attempting to copy a rival attraction, The London Dungeon.
A spokesperson for Merlin Entertainments said that no formal hearing is expected before the autumn, but stressed that Merlin "has never objected to London Bridge Experience building a distinct and different business, competitive to our own."
