Leisure scheme launches in Mansfield
A new leisure scheme has been unveiled by Mansfield District Council (MDC), which will see free day gym passes offered to local residents in a bid to boost participation.
The initiative has been launched following the publication of a study by Sport England, which found that more than half of people older than 16 years old across the district were not exercising regularly. Fewer than 10 per cent were found to be taking part in the government recommended five 30-minute sessions of moderate exercise per week. It is hoped the new promotion will increase that number.
Water Meadows; the Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre; River Maun Recreation Centre; Oak Tree Leisure Centre; and Meden Sports Centre are among the participating facilities. MDC portfolio holder for the environment Eddie Smith said: "We are making a determined effort to get more people exercising, especially those who currently do nothing.
"We hope this offer will encourage more people to make that important first step towards a healthier lifestyle." The free gym passes include a 15-minute fitness induction course.
