Laurel & Hardy unveiled in Cumbria
A bronze statue of comedy duo Laurel and Hardy has been unveiled in Ulverston County Square in Cumbria.
Comedian Ken Dodd unveiled the icon at an event attended by around 130 members of the Sons of the Desert international fan club, who raised the £60,000 price tag.
The unveiling also marked the relocation of the town's Laurel and Hardy museum to its new home in the former Roxy Cinema building.
Founded by the late Bill Cubin in 1983, and now in family hands, the museum presents memorabilia on Stan and Ollie, including letters, photographs, personal items such as Stan's bowler hat and birth certificate and even furniture from the house in Ulverston where Stan was born.
The attraction also houses two cinemas - a small replica of the original museum's cinema and a new larger screen.
Arthur Stanley Jefferson and sidekick Oliver Hardy met in 1926 at Hal Roach Studios in Hollywood and partnered up to appear in 106 short films and motion pictures over a 31-year career.
Hardy suffered a heart attack and died in 1956, while Laurel died in 1965, having won a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Oscars in 1961.
