Kentish Town sport centre's future in balance
Camden Council will meet next week (4 April) to consider plans for the £25.3m refurbishment of Kentish Town Sports Centre.
More than 400 residents have been consulted about the proposals for the Victorian baths, which opened in 1901 as a public washhouse and laundry. Many of their views have been incorporated into the new design.
As well as considerable restoration works to the building, planned improvements to the site include a larger health and fitness suite with 125 stations, two studios, a new 25m pool, a teaching pool and new changing facilities. There will also be general upgrades throughout the building to ensure it meets DDA requirements.
The plans allow for a small number of private town houses and flats to help pay for the site.
Further funding will come from capital receipts and borrowing, and the council will also explore additional sources of funding, such as the National Lottery and English Heritage.
The Grade II listed building was last refurbished in 1961 and has been closed since February 2007 for safety reasons after a pane of glass fell from the ceiling into one of the pools.
